New Zimbabwe reported that a Beitbridge Border Post customs clearing agent teamed up with two other men to steal a cobalt-containing truck from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Christopher Chitauro, the truck’s driver, was in the hospital with malaria at the time.
The truck has since been recovered.
As quoted in the market news:
‘[Chitauro] was carrying a consignment of cobalt and engaged the suspect to facilitate the customs clearance,’ said Chief Supt Majuta.
‘He then fell sick on the following day at around 1400 hours while waiting for the documents to be processed at the border post.
‘The agent rushed him to Beitbridge District Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
Later that day the customs agent visited Chitauro at the hospital around 1700 hours in the company of two unknown men.
‘The trio then stole the keys to the vehicle and went to the truck shop and drove off. They drove the truck to South Africa after they had completed processing customs documents,’ said Chief Supt Majuta.
